Disney Joins Netflix In The War Against Password Sharing In India
Portfolio Pulse from Shomik Sen Bhattacharjee
Disney (NYSE:DIS) plans to limit premium users of its Disney+ Hotstar streaming service in India to logging in from just four devices, following Netflix's (NASDAQ:NFLX) similar move. Currently, a Disney+ Hotstar premium account in India allows logins on up to 10 devices. The new restriction will also apply to its cheaper plan, limiting usage across two devices. Disney+ Hotstar led India’s streaming market from January 2022 to March 2023 with a 38% share of viewership.

NEUTRAL IMPACT
Disney's decision to limit device logins for Disney+ Hotstar in India could potentially increase individual subscriptions but may also risk losing some users due to the new restrictions.
The impact on Disney's stock is uncertain. On one hand, the new policy could incentivize more people to buy their own subscriptions, potentially increasing revenue. On the other hand, it could also lead to a loss of users who are not willing to comply with the new restrictions, potentially decreasing revenue.
